Leeton

/ˈlitn/ (say 'leetn)

noun
a town and shire in southern NSW, south-east of Griffith; headquarters of the Murrumbidgee Irrigation Area and of the Rice Marketing Board for NSW.
{named after Charles Alfred Lee, 1842–1926, NSW minister for public works, 1904–10, and involved in the initiation of the Murrumbidgee Irrigation Scheme}
The Leeton region lies in territory traditionally inhabited by the Wiradjuri people. Leeton, the oldest town in the Murrumbidgee Irrigation Area (MIA) , was designed by Walter Burley Griffin in 1912, the year when the first water was supplied to the scheme. The first buildings were irrigation-trust offices, as local government was run by the Water Conservation and Irrigation Commission until shires were created in 1928. A cannery was established in 1914 and in 1935 became a cooperative (Letona) which operated until 1993. The first rice mill in the MIA opened here in 1951 and the town is now the centre of the Australian rice industry and headquarters of the Rice Marketing Board for NSW. Other industries include fruit processing, dairying, beef cattle and wineries.
